Arsene Wenger has revealed that he will retain new Arsenal signing Konstantinos Mavropanos until the end of the season.
Mavropanos, a £2million signing from Greek side PAS Gianina in January, also looks set for further first-team opportunities after being named on the bench for Wednesday’s EFL Cup semi-final first leg against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Arsenal had initially planned to send the defender out to German side Werder Bremen for the remainder of the season, but such has been Mavropanos’ impact in training over the last week he now looks set to remain with the first-team.
“I personally want to keep him until May to know him better, to assess his level,” Wenger said.
“The first signs he showed in training were so encouraging that I decided to keep him.”
Had he come on against Chelsea, Mavropanos would have been ineligible for a loan move given Fifa rules stipulating that a footballer cannot play for more than two clubs with similar season schedules in the same campaign.
