Blackcaps bowler Ish Sodhi determined to play more Test cricket for New Zealand

Spin bowler Ish Sodhi hasn’t given up on cracking the Blackcaps Test team, even though he’s been overlooked again for the current series against the West Indies.

Sodhi starred for New Zealand on the recent Indian tour in the Twenty20s and was a late replacement in the One Day International [ODI] squad, but hasn’t featured in a Test match in more than a year.

The 25-year-old wants to play more Test cricket for New Zealand and devoted to working on his game domestically with the Northern Knights to push his case for selection.

The next opportunity to play Test cricket won’t come until March next year, which gives the India-born Sodhi plenty of time to work on his game.

“I really want to play in all three formats,” said Sodhi.

“I think going back to domestic cricket and working really hard on my batting and fielding over the last month or so will benefit me.

“It is about putting in those contributions to be able to win games and show you value for the international side. It is about keeping it about keeping it simple and hopefully I perform.”

Following the tour of India, Sodhi said he has been in regular contact with Blackcaps coach Mike Hesson who has told him what aspects of his game he needs to work on while playing domestic cricket.

Sodhi believes he has made steady improvements since returning from India.

“They have been really positive with me after India giving me some really clear-cut things to work on.

“I feel like I have made those gains so far and hoping to continue making those as I progress.

“Hopefully I get a chance, but if not I just have to go back to domestic cricket and keep bulling on the progress I’ve made so far.”
