Deputy shooting at Lantana crash on I-95 linked to sho

Noon UPDATE: A Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputy fatally shot a man Wednesday morning on Interstate 95 near Lantana Road, authorities said.

He was in the car with a woman who authorities say he shot shortly after 9:30 a.m. at a shopping plaza on South Dixie Highway in Lake Worth.

When Palm Beach County Fire Rescue authorities responded to the scene, the woman who had been shot already had left. People told rescue crews the woman had been driven to a hospital. However authorities say that the woman was in the car with the shooter.

The details of what led to the fatal deputy-involved shooting on I-95 are unclear, though sheriff’s authorities are expected to provide more details within the hour. The woman shot in Lake Worth died in the car on I-95, according to authorities.

11:55 p.m. UPDATE: Jacqui Mentink, who lives west of Boynton Beach, said that at about 9:45 a.m, she was driving northbound on I-95, and traffic had slowed to negotiate the westward jog between Belvedere Road and Okeechobee Boulevard, when she saw a dark vehicle, perhaps a SUV, racing in the wrong direction on the eastern shoulder of northbound I-95.

11:35 a.m. UPDATE: A woman at the scene said her father was in a black Audi driving to work on I-95 and a cap flipped on top of his car.

She said her father was OK and was being questioned by authorities. She and her sister were hugging each other standing at the Lantana Road overpass. The woman asked not to be named.

11:25 p.m. UPDATE: Two people died in the crash on Interstate 95, Palm Beach County Fire Rescue said.

Crews responded to the scene at 9:50 a.m., and said one of the six to eight vehicles involved in the crash was on fire. Firefighters quickly extinguished the car fire and checked the occupants for injuries.

In addition, one person was taken to a trauma hospital, and another was taken to a local non-trauma hospital.

10:55 a.m. UPDATE: The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said in a tweet that all Interstate 95 northbound lanes from Lantana Road to 6th Avenue will be closed indefinitely.

Original story: A person was shot Wednesday morning by a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s deputy on Interstate 95 in Lantana, authorities said. Sheriff’s spokeswoman Teri Barbera did not immediately have details on the person’s injuries. She said the deputy was not hurt.

All lanes of the expressway are closed, according to the Florida Highway Patrol web site.

Barbera said the shooting likely is connected to a nearby crash involving six to eight cars. It also might be related to a car seen racing southbound in the northbound lanes of I-95 moments earlier. A Palm Beach Post editor said the car shook his vehicle as it raced by.
