EFL: Vermont football and cricket clubs unite for Kire Talevski

THERE’S a chance there will be a turn up when the Vermont Football Club faces co-tenants Vermont Cricket Club in a Twenty20 fundraiser later this month.

The two clubs are coming together to raise funds for star Mooroolbark forward Kire Talevski following his cancer diagnosis.

The football club could boast Prahran quick Matt Wilcox and former Premier cricketers Jake Best and Brett Eddy in its line up.

Wilcox has just returned from a season in England, while Best is a former Casey South Melbourne captain and Eddy also has First XI experience from his time with the Swans.

“We were hoping to get Jakey Best and Matt Wilcox to come and play with us this season but no joy unfortunately and we lost Shane Davidson, who has been a gun for us for years — he’s now just playing footy,” Vermont Cricket Club president Matt Ryan said.

“They’ve certainly got some handy cricketers in the side.”

A GoFundMepage has raised more than $44,000 for the Talevski family.

Talevski played in Vermont’s 2005 and 2007 Eastern Football League premierships and is an Eagles junior. He also won a cricket premiership with Vermont’s Third XI in 2005-06.

“Kire is well thought of around the clubs and still has plenty of friends out there,” Ryan said.

All proceeds from the bar, barbecue and canteen will go to the Talevski family.

Sporting memorabilia will also be available to be purchased.

The fundraiser will be held on Thursday, February 15 at Vermont Recreation Reserve from 5pm.
