Hungarian water polo clubs Ferencvaros and Miskolc dominated at the First round qualifying tournaments in the Euro Cup. Defending champion Ferencvaros won the tournament in Italian Busto Arsizio with a maximum number of wins, just like Miskolci which hosted the other qualifying tournament.

Ferencvaros won all six games in Italy and as it was expected, the toughest rivals for Hungarian team were the host, BPM Sport Management and Jadran, Croatian team from Split. In the game against BPM, the defending champion won 11:9, but Italians were tough rivals almost until the end of the last quarter. But, in the decisive moments, Marton Vamos scored a goal which swept away a hosts dream that they could bag a surprise.

In the game against Jadran Split, Hungarian water polo giant won 8:5, but also could not break the resistance of the opponent until the last quarter. But then Stefan Mitrovic and Nikola Jaksic scored consecutive goals to give Ferencvaros an important win.

BPM and Jadran also managed to qualify for the next stage of the competition. Both teams won 13 points but Italians had a better goal difference at the end of this tournament. In the direct duel they drew 11:11. The BPM Sports Management dominated for three-quarters of the game in the duel against Jadran. But in the last period of the game, Italians fell asleep and Croats managed to come back from a four goals deficit.

Figlioli and Gallo scored three goals apiece for BPM in that game, while Marinic-Kragic had the same performance for Jadran.

The last, fourth qualifying spot in B group was won by French team Pays d’Aix. They won three and lost three games and the decisive one was against another French team Montpellier. And Pays d’Aix won that little French derby in Italy – 14:9.

Miskolc water polo club fully took the advantage of the home swimming pool in Group A and won all five games at this tournament. Two toughest opponents for the Hungarian team were Russian Shturm and Montenegrin Primorac. And Miskolci dealt easily with them. In the first round they won against Shturm with a huge 10 goal margin (16:6), and after that, they beat Primorac (14:6).

Those defeats against Miskolc, however, did not leave Shturm and Primorac without the places in the next stage of the competition. In a direct duel, these two teams drew 9:9, and Primorac won the second place because of the better goal difference. And the last qualifying spot in the Group A belongs to Spanish water polo club Mataro. They clinched it thanks to wins against Kosice and Hannover.
