The European transfer window may only have been closed a matter of weeks but clubs will already have an idea where they still need to strengthen in January.

Our friends at Football Whispers have scoured the media across Europe for the latest news and transfer rumours.

Spain

Cristiano Ronaldo will wait before renewing his contract at Real Madrid. In June, Ronaldo, who has recently been linked with a return to Manchester United, was accused of not paying €14.7m in taxes, with reports claiming that had prompted him to decide to leave Spain. While Ronaldo’s contract situation remains somewhat up in the air, Raphaël Varane has agreed a new deal with the club, keeping him at the Bernabeu until 2022. (AS)

Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann admits he did not enjoy his finest evening after his side suffered a dramatic Champions League defeat to Chelsea. The Manchester United target opened the scoring but was brutally honest in his assessment of his own performance, saying “it was not a good day for me.” (MARCA)

Germany

Bayern Munich manager Carlo Ancelotti defended his team selection after the German side slumped to a 3-0 Champions League defeat against Paris Saint-Germain. Ancelotti left Mats Hummels, Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery on the bench as the French side cruised to an impressive victory at the Parc des Princes.

Meanwhile, Bayern’s chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said the result was a “very bitter loss” and that what “we saw this evening was not Bayern Munich”. (Bild)

Meanwhile, Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has revealed that he has played with a metal plate in his right foot for the past nine years. Neuer is currently recovering from an operation last week after suffering a hairline fracture of the metatarsal during a training session, which is likely to keep him out until the new year. (Bild)

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Marco Reus will postpone his comeback from injury from January to March in order to ensure that he is fully fit for the World Cup. Former Arsenal target Reus is currently recovering from a torn cruciate ligament which he picked up in the DFB Cup final against Eintracht Frankfurt in May, but wants to ensure his participation at next summer’s tournament in Russia having missed the 2014 finals through injury. Italy

Gonzalo Higuaín was Juventus’ saviour after coming off the bench to score the opener in the club’s 2-0 Champions League win over Olympiakos. Higuaín scored nine minutes after replacing Juan Cuadrado as the Serie A champions clinched their first Champions League points of the season. (Corriere dello Sport)

AC Milan considered making an approach for Roberto Mancini last summer. The Rossoneri signed 11 players as they look to get back into the Champions League and thought about replacing Vincenzo Montella with the former Inter Milan boss. Mancini was ultimately appointed as Zenit St Petersburg manager. (Calciomercato)

France

Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy will learn the severity of his injury on Thursday. The left-back, signed from Monaco in the summer, is to see a leading specialist in Barcelona as the Premier League club wait for news. Previous reports indicated that Mendy had ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and could face up to nine months out, but the player himself said they were wide of the mark. (L’Equipe)

Paris Saint-Germain CEO Nasser Al-Khelaifi says Neymar is the best player on the planet after the Brazilian played a starring role in their 3-0 triumph over Bayern Munich. Neymar and reported Chelsea target Edinson Cavani, who have both dominated the headlines over the past week following their public penalty spat, both scored as the Ligue 1 side went top of the group.
