The praise keeps coming for Gary Rowett after the Derby County boss was named Sky Bet Championship manager of the month for December.

The Rams were unbeaten last month, winning five of their six games and conceded only one goal – a run of form that saw them climb up to second in the table.

Goalkeeper Scott Carson made it a double success for Derby by picking up the Championship player of the month prize.

It is the second time this season that Rowett has been recognised for the job he is doing at Pride Park, having been named manager of the month for October.

The Sky Bet manager of the month judging panel is chaired by former Derby boss George Burley.

“Gary was a very popular choice of manager for Derby County and he is showing how shrewd the appointment was,” said Burley, who led the Rams to the Championship play-offs in 2004-05.

“Their unbeaten December was rounded off with an impressive win at Portman Road (against Ipswich) which took them into the second automatic promotion place.”

Derby County news and views

Rowett signed a new three-and-a-half-year contract with the Rams this week, following reported interest in him from Premier League club Stoke City.

Sky Sports’ EFL pundit Don Goodman added: “After fending off reported interest from Stoke and securing Gary onto a new long-term contract at the club, (chairman) Mel Morris will be a very happy man this week.

“One of the brightest English management talents in the game, I believe Gary is destined to have a career in the Premier League and it wouldn’t surprise many if that was with Derby after the terrific three months they have had.”

Goodman, who chairs the player of the month judging panel, also paid tribute to Carson.

“Derby’s fantastic December was built on a solid defensive platform and Carson has to take great credit for that, marshalling the defence and pulling off a string of show-stopping saves,” said the former Sunderland and Wolves striker.

“Scott has said that he’s playing the best football of his entire career and it’s clear to see that the stability and reassurance that he’s been given at Derby is paying dividends.”
