It was a distinct pleasure for me to play the Black Course at Streamsong this past week. The Tampa area course opened in September to rave reviews and I can now personally attest to its beauty and playability. The layout is superb, and conditioning is excellent for such a new course. You might find the greens to be a challenge, I certainly did. If you get a chance, take advantage of the opportunity.

That said:

Dan Miller scores a hole in one

Christmas came a day late for Killearn Country Club member Dan Miller as he aced the 175-yard par 3, 14th hole at the club. Miller performed the feat on Dec. 26 using a rescue hybrid. The shot was witnessed by his son Andrew Miller, George Unglaub and Kyle Unglaub. It doesn’t get any better than having your son on hand to witness such an historic golf event. What a memory!!!

Seminole Club Championship

Seminole Golf Course and Club hosted its Men’s Club Championship on Dec. 16-17. Claiming first place was Chip Minick with a hard-fought 70 in the final round for 144. Nipping at his heels and finishing second was former Missourian Tim Landolt. Lite Scratch Tour player Bob Lasko took third with David Hoover finishing 4th. The Senior Gross Champion was renowned Federal Jurist Bob Hinkle with Steve Marsh capturing the Senior Net division. Congratulations all on your great play!!!

Lite Scratch Tour-2018 Season begins

Entries are open for the 2018 Lite Scratch Tour Florida season opener (Jan 20-21) at the Hombre Golf Club in Panama City Beach. Entries will close Jan.14.

The entry form can be found at www.litescratchtourflorida.com/hombreentry.htm

Hombre is in good condition tee to green, and the greens are perfect. Tee times start at 9:00 am each day off tees 1 and 10. Practice rounds are $35 during tournament week and must be reserved. No practice rounds will be available Friday morning.

The host hotel is the LaQuinta Inn, 17710 PC Beach Parkway. Rooms are $79 plus tax per night. Twelve doubles and three kings have been blocked for the tour until Jan. 12. Identify yourself as a member of the Miller Lite Golf Tour.

Senior player Bob Gaff reminds us that although this is a scratch tour, there are numerous flights to accommodate a wide range of players. So, consider playing, looks fun!!!!

Summerbrooke Club Championship

The Summerbrooke MGA held their annual Club Championship on Dec. 2 with Alex Kitsos holding off Pat Irwin for the win. Kitsos had a clutch birdie on the difficult par 3, 17th which proved to be the deciding shot in the tournament. In the Senior Flight, Glenn Woodsum fired an outstanding 76 for a runaway victory. Well done gentlemen!!!

Big Bend Ladies

The Big Bend Ladies League continued their matches at The Golf Club at Summerbrooke Dec. 12. Summerbrooke took medalist honors making 2.778 points, besting the ladies from St. James Bay who scored 2.000 points. Standouts from the match were Mary Berens and Linda Slade of Summerbrooke with an amazing plus 11 points and 10 points respectfully. Carol Allman of Havana finished with a plus 9 points. Three players finished with plus 7 points, Clarine Lizana of Hilaman, Debbie Dantin of Killearn, and Vivian Hardy of St. James Bay.

St. James Bay remains in the lead in the 11-match series with Tired Creek Golf Course in second. However, the ladies of Tired Creek Golf Course will have a chance to narrow or take the lead as they host the next match on Jan. 15.

Golden Eagle MGA

The Golden Eagle Men’s Golf Association hosted their final event of the year on December 16th with an ABCD tournament. The format was taking the combination of one net best ball from the two lowest handicap golfers and one net best ball from the two highest handicap players in each group to determine the team’s score.

Winning the tournament was HCA executive Michael Joyce, RT Electric owner Rob Thompson, perennial favorite Jerry Dufford and Super Senior Tim Farrar with a 132. One shot back and finishing in second was the team of Dr. Mark “Doc” McQuary, Bo “Jam” Bryan, Brian Wimpling and David Dye. Congratulations for such good play on a cold morning!!!

Looking forward to this upcoming year in golf. If you have any news or events you would like to share with the readership, please send to Woodrow.Simmons2010@Gmail.Com.
