There was, at least, some good news for Gregor Townsend as he contemplated his options before naming an injury-ravaged 36-man training squad on Tuesday, which will congregate in Edinburgh this evening to start preparation for next month’s three-match autumn Test series against Samoa on November 11, New Zealand on November 18 and Australia the week after that.

Alex Dunbar, who had surgery on his knee at the end of September and was initially given a prognosis of six weeks on the sidelines, was deemed fit enough by his medics to be included in the squad.
