Newcastle United lie ninth in the Premier League after a pleasant start back to life in the top flight – something which has surprised many pundits.

Every weekend pundits across the footballing world reveal their predictions, with Sky Sports Paul Merson and the BBC’s Mark Lawrenson provoking particular reaction from United fans on a regular basis.

The pair have not held back in their predictions for Newcastle this season, with fans now not surprised when a defeat is forecast.

If anything, when – and it hasn’t yet happened this season – one of the two predict a Newcastle victory, fans may check if hell has frozen over.

Going back through their predictions of the opening eight games of the season – Newcastle would currently have a points tally of THREE.

Both pundits had predicted Newcastle to draw three games and lose five – winning none.

That would leave Newcastle joint bottom of the Premier League with Crystal Palace. Even more baffling is the fact that both suggest that United would be leaky at the back.

Merson predicting scores that would have seen United concede 16 goals this season and Lawrenson, 13.
