Paul Gonzales, Olympic Gold Medalist Arrested, Lewd Acts on Child

According to multiple reports, authorities are looking for more potential victims in connection with the shocking arrest of Olympic gold medalist and boxing trainer, Paul Gonzales, who has been accused of committing lewd acts with a child.

This week the Los Angeles County Attorney’s Office filed charges against Gonzales, 53, with eight felony counts, including four for lewd acts with a child and one for possession of child pornography, according to the court records.

A spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department did not provide more information about the alleged crimes. It is not known how many victims have been identified by the investigators.

During the past decade, Gonzales has worked as the head coach of the Eddie Heredia Boxing Club, a boxing gym in East Los Angeles that is operated by the LA County Parks and Recreation Department.

Investigators believe there could be more victims because Gonzales has trained and guided several children over the years. He is being held on $545,000 bail and will appear in court this month.

Gonzales won the light flyweight gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics. He was the winner of the Val Barker Trophy for Outstanding Boxer at those Games, after having won a silver medal the previous year at the 1983 Pan American Games.

At those Olympic games, he defeated Kwang-Sun Kim (South Korea) 5-0, William Bagonza (Uganda) 5-0, John Lyon (Great Britain) 4-1, Marcelino Bolivar (Venezuela) 5-0.

He never found the same level of success in the pros.

Gonzales began his professional career in 1985 and went on to challenge bantamweight legend Orlando Canizales for the IBF Bantamweight title in 1990 in a rematch of a 1986 bout in which Gonzales won by unanimous decision. In the rematch, Gonzales was stopped by TKO in the 2nd due to cuts. After two more losses against lackluster competition, Gonzales made a decision to retire in 1991.

Gonzales actually tried to run for office, but was defeated.
