Report: Trainer suspended, fined after horses test positive for Viagra

California stewards ruled Monday to fine trainer Mike Mudaris $17,500 and suspended him for 18 months, according to the Daily Racing Form, after two of Mudaris’ horses to run in Del Mar’s 2016 summer meeting tested positive for sildenafil — also known as Viagra.

Mudaris has appealed the sanctions, his lawyer told DRF, saying, “He wants to correct the record.”

Attorney Roger Diamond said Mudaris’ employees are responsible for administering the drug, and that the trainer was not at Del Mar the day his horses tested positive.

The 54-year-old conditioner has won 35 races during his career but none this year. Per DRF, the penalties levied against him are some of California’s most severe in recent memory.

One of the horses to test positive, California-bred Shakeitupbetty, raced three more times in 2016 with a pair of runner-up efforts. Kentucky-bred Lancol has gone on to make 12 more starts, including one Monday in which he finished fifth in a claiming race at Fresno.

Both horses were removed from Mudaris’ care after the incidents at Del Mar.
