The University girls golf team won the CIF State championship on Tuesday, finishing seven shots ahead of runner-up Troy at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach.
Dana Choi, Nodoka Honda and Coco Yang each shot a 3-over 74 to lead the way for the Trojans, while Samantha Cabunag shot a 79 and Alexis Kim shot 82.
Troy, which won the state title last year, was led by Isabel Sy (75) and Kamile Dimayuga (77) and Mylan Hirata (77).
The lowest score of the day was a 2-under 69 shot by Zoe Campos of West Ranch of Santa Clarita.
BOYS WATER POLO
The CIF Southern California Boys Water Polo Championships debut later this week in Orange County but Mater Dei coach Chris Segesman is yearning for something more.
“I wish they would go to a state tournament because this year, a state tournament would have been epic with the great teams in NorCal,” he said.
Mater Dei (27-3) swept through the competition in the CIF-Southern Section, culminating with a 13-9 victory against Oaks Christian in the Division 1 final Saturday night in Irvine. The Monarchs’ three losses are against Northern California schools, including twice by a goal to Campolindo of Moraga.
But Segesman is still pleased to have the regionals, which could be a precursor to a state tournament.
One hitch is the state’s girls water polo seasons aren’t aligned.
Mater Dei’s boys are seeded first in an eight-team Division 1 tournament that runs Friday and Saturday. The Monarchs open against Palisades on Friday at 4 p.m. at Newport Harbor.
The championship is Saturday at Corona del Mar at 5:30 p.m.
“We’re definitely going to go and compete and we’re going to have a really good time with it,” Segesman said of the regionals.
“(But CIF-SS Division 1) is the pinnacle. It’s everything we talked about since we were knocked out last year in the quarterfinals by Huntington Beach.”
Newport Harbor is seeded third in the Division 1 regional and opens Friday at 6:20 p.m. against visiting La Jolla.
Orange Lutheran is seeded first in a Division 2 bracket that opens at Corona del Mar and includes No. 3 Santa Margarita and No. 5 Huntington Beach. The Division 2 final is Saturday at Corona del Mar at 4 p.m.
Corona del Mar’s Division 1 champion girls tennis team (23-0) is seeded second to Torrey Pines in the CIF/USTA Southern California regional championships Friday and Saturday at The Claremont Club.
Corona del Mar opens Friday against Clovis North at 10:45 a.m. Division 1 runner-up University takes on Arcadia at 12:15 p.m.
The championship is Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
