New research has revealed apricots could help with weight loss as they are one of nine foods which can help make us feel full. 

The reason apricots make our tummies content is said to be down to a reaction in the brain. 

According to a study published in journal Molecular Metabolism, brain cells called tanycytes detect nutrients in food and help control appetite. 

Some foods contain types of amino acids that stimulate tanycytes more than others. 

There are nine foods the study specifically mentioned: 

  • Apricots 
  • Almonds
  • Lentils
  • Plums
  • Chicken 
  • Pork shoulder 
  • Sirloin steak 
  • Mackerel 
  • Avocados 

The foods are also paced with protein which are known to satisfy hunger for longer. 

Dr Nicholas Dale, professor of neuroscience at the University of Warwick, which carried out the study, said: “Amino acid levels in blood and the brain following a meal are an important signal that imparts the sensation of feeling full. 

“Finding that tanycytes sense amino acids has significant implications for finding new ways to help control weight.” 

That meant they got either an egg breakfast containing two eggs (340 kcal) or a breakfast containing bagels matched for energy density and total energy for five days a week.

After just eight weeks, in comparison to the BD group, the ED group showed a 61 per cent greater reduction in BMI. 

Scientists conducting the research believe the egg breakfast enhances weight loss when combined with an energy-deficit diet. 

However, it does not induce weight loss in a free-living condition – meaning you can’t eat eggs for breakfast and go wild the rest of the time and still expect weight loss. 

The inclusion of eggs in a weight management program may offer a nutritious supplement to enhance weight loss, researchers concluded.
