The romance of this year’s FA Cup could continue for Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy if Claude Puel’s men reach the fourth round.
City face a replay on Tuesday against Vardy’s former club Fleetwood and the winners will face Peterborough in the next round. That could see Vardy going head-to-head with one of the graduates of his own V9 Academy.
Vardy missed the first game against the Codmen through injury but should be available to face the club he credits for launching his professional career in next week’s replay.
Fleetwood were the first professional club Vardy played for and he signed for City after just one season, scoring 34 goals in 40 games.
Should City progress to take on the Posh, Vardy could be marked at London Road by defender Alex Penny, who was spotted by the League One club while participating in the week-long trials at the V9 Academy in Manchester.
The academy is designed to give non-league players the chance to impress Football League clubs and Penny was the fourth graduate to sign professional forms after Posh paid Nuneaton Town £50,000 for his services.
Like Vardy, who was rejected by Sheffield Wednesday as a teenager before rebuilding his career in non-league, right-back Penny was on Hull City’s books but was released.
Whoever progresses to take on Penny and Posh, the game has been selected for live television coverage with an earlier kick-off of 12.30pm on Saturday, January 27.
