Body of New Lenox teen killed in Metra crash is found miles from the scene

The second of two teens who were fatally struck by a Metra train Wednesday night in Joliet has been identified as a 15-year-old from New Lenox.

The body of Charles G. Cooper was spotted in Hickory Creek near Gardner Street in Joliet, more than three miles downstream from the scene of the accident, by a Joliet resident at about 2:20 p.m. Saturday.

The other teen who was killed by the train, Jacob A. Manka, 17, of Mokena, was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident in Joliet on Wednesday night.

The two were among a group of three teens who were apparently trespassing on the train tracks that span a bridge near Pilcher Park when the train approached, according to a Metra spokesman.

The third teen managed to avoid being struck because he was running on the opposite track of the approaching Metra Rock Island train, according to Metra officials.
