Brexit news today: Boris Johnson announces leadership bid as Theresa May meets Tory MPs over resignation date

Tory Brexiteer Andrew Bridgen said he hoped there would be a leadership contest over the summer and a new prime minister in place by September.

He said: “We will be able to have the Conservative Party leadership concluded well before the end of the summer recess and by September, when we come back, we will have a new prime minister and it needs to be a Brexiteer who believes in Brexit and is willing to get us out on October 31 without a deal, if necessary.”

Mr Bridgen said the second reading of the Withdrawal Agreement Bill was the “last throw of the political dice by an increasingly isolated and beleaguered Prime Minister who is desperate to salvage something from her premiership but is quite willing to try and push through again her fatally flawed Withdrawal Agreement which would fatally hamstring in future negotiations with the European Union her successor”.
