Broncos speedster James Roberts lasted just five minutes in the Telstra Premiership season opener against Storm in Melbourne when he limped from the field with a lower back injury.
Storm fullback Jahrome Hughes had just scored the first try for the new NRL season, when Roberts appeared to be in trouble.
He grabbed his lower back and couldn’t walk without limping.
Roberts, who made his NSW Origin debut last year, was assisted down the tunnel at AAMI Park by trainers and by the time he made it to the Broncos shed, he could barely walk.
Television commentators said Roberts would not be back for the night.
Kotoni Staggs came off the Broncos bench to move into Roberts’ right centre position.
New coach Anthony Seibold’s tenure at Brisbane could not have got off to a worse start as he lost Roberts and the super sharp Storm raced out to a 10-0 lead after 20 minutes.
