- Here is what you need to know about drinking coffee before a meal and whether or not it will accelerate weight loss
New Delhi: Coffee, for a lot of people, is not just a beverage, but an emotion. Coffee helps one feel energised and motivated on a day when they feel too lazy or tired to work. However, coffee is also a very popular pre and post-workout beverage for gym-goers as it helps one feel energised to be able to exercise with all vigour.
People often find themselves confused about drinking coffee during the day, especially before a meal. Some say that it is a healthy practice because it speeds up the process of digestion in the body, while some do not agree with the point. Can drinking coffee before a meal aid digestion and accelerate weight loss? Let’s find out.
A lot of people like to wake up to a cup of brewing coffee which helps them take on the day. Drinking coffee as the first thing in the morning helps them feel energised to do all the tasks they have planned for the day. However, drinking coffee on an empty stomach in the morning is not recommended. According to a report, drinking coffee in the morning on an empty stomach can cause anxiety, jitters, increased heart rate, inability to focus, irritability, and may also lead to bloating. Cortisol levels in the body are at their highest during 8-9 am which causes our circadian rhythm to wake us up naturally. When you drink coffee at that time, it can reduce the cortisol levels, causing you to feel lazy and sleepy, instead of pumped up with energy.
When it comes to drinking coffee as a pre-workout drink, it is recommended that you drink black coffee. Black coffee contains no calories and provides the energy that you need to work out.
Drinking coffee before a meal, especially lunch, is believed to reduce the laziness and sleepiness that occurs after eating. It is believed that drinking coffee before eating your meal can help reduce the drop in performance that occurs post-lunch. A study found that the belief may, in fact, be true and coffee can really help reduce the dip in performance. However, no such observation was made when it comes to accelerating weight loss.
According to another report, the best time to drink your cup of coffee is neither before a meal nor as the first thing in the morning. Keeping cortisol levels, productivity and other factors in mind, it has been concluded that drinking coffee between 9:30 am and 11:30 am will reap the most benefits in terms of productivity, increasing metabolism and digestion, and will prove to be much healthier than drinking coffee at other times.
