Newcastle golfer Blake Windred will take extra confidence into this week’s final stage of qualification for European Tour School having booked his ticket with victory in Spain. The 21-year-old conquered “absolutely brutal” conditions to finish five clear of his nearest rival in the second stage of qualification at Almeria’s Desert Springs Golf Club on Monday (AEST). He shot rounds of 68, 68, 66 and four-over 76 to finish 10 under the card. Wind gusts reaching up to 80 kilometres per hour forced the postponement of the last round at half of the four venues. DOWN THE FAIRWAY: Luke Ferrier keen to cap off stellar 2019 with Newcastle district championship “It was tough today,” Windred told Golf NSW media. “It was still until about 11; then it was absolutely brutal.” Windred had some helpful advice from fellow Australian professional Dimi Papadatos. “It definitely feels a little more cutthroat than your average tournament, but that’s what I like most,” he said. “If you play good golf you will get through and If you don’t play good you will miss, that’s what Dimi told me.” Novocastrian Nick Flanagan will also play the final stage at Lumine Golf Club.
