Let’s face it, you’ve been spending hours at the gym and eating healthy food — while your friends passed each other fries right in front of your face — for as long as you can remember. But if all that sacrifice hasn’t done anything to help you lose weight and get the beach bod you’ve been dreaming of all summer, maybe it’s time to rethink your fitness regime or just get inspired by Aakash Jaiswal.

What motivated Aakash Jaiswal to lose 30 kg. Twice.

Over the last few months, we’ve been sharing inspirational stories of our readers who’ve lost weight, gained confidence and kicked ass. Meet Aakash Jaiswal, a 27-year-old IT professional from Amravati in Maharashtra who lost 30 kg and gained all that weight back because he couldn’t sustain the weight loss. And so, the second time around Aakash went about doing it right and lost 30 kg all over again. This is his story:

When he was in his final year of Engineering Aakash decided he needed to lose weight. “I weighed 130 kg and carried around body fat of about 40 per cent back then. My waist size was a gigantic 50 inches and it was really difficult to find clothes in my size.” It was then that he decided to pull himself together and get his life back on track with regard to his health and fitness, before it was too late. “At first I just did cardio and lifted light weights for months together at the gym. I did not alter my diet much. Just by following this simple routine, I managed to lose 30 kg in 16 months.”

But his goal didn’t just stop at weight loss. He wanted to build muscle and get ripped as well. This was easier said than done because by now he had moved to the US to pursue his post graduation. As was wont, his routine went for a toss, his workouts stopped and Aakash Jaiswal went from 99 kg back to 125 kg.

“My girlfriend dumped me and that was what motivated me to pull up my socks yet again. And this time around, I wanted six pack abs.” And so he proceeded to do just that. Today, he weights 93 kg and has a body fat percentage of 21. Obviously, it was a tad more difficult the second time around:

The first time around, Aakash went about losing weight in the most casual manner possible. He hit the gym, did cardio, did weights and didn’t bother changing his diet. Obviously, his discipline paid off but it took him 16 long months to lose 30 kg. When he went at it the second time around, he lost the same amount of weight in just seven months. Because this time he took his weight loss a lot more seriously. This was his daily exercise routine at the gym:

  • 30 minutes of cardio
  • 10 minutes of abs exercises
  • 45 minutes of weight lifting

“I spend a little over two hours every day at the gym. On days when I feel tired, I ensure I do my weight training and cut down on my cardio. It’s very important to focus on muscle building during weight loss as it helps burn calories even while you are resting,” he says.

What to eat to lose weight:

This was Aakash’s diet to shed fat and build muscle:

  • Breakfast: Lukewarm water with apple cider vinegar and 4-6 egg whites
  • Lunch: 2 wheat rotis, 1 bowl daal, 1 green vegetable, 150gm chicken/paneer/soya chunks/rajma
  • Evening Snack: Black coffee and 2 slices of brown bread with all-natural peanut butter
  • Dinner: 250gm chicken with green beans/broccoli.
  • Water: 5-6 litres every day

Aakash says it’s crucial to measure your food if you really want to lose weight. “It also helps that I cook my own meals so I can control the portions I prepare,” he says adding, “While it’s important to avoid sweets when you’re trying to lose weight, it’s ok if you consume up to two teaspoons of sugar every day.”

To help him lose weight, Aakash used two apps — My Fitness Pal and Healthify Me — but he recommends the latter since it has almost all Indian foods.

Jaiswal explains that one of the biggest health myths that he has come across is that cardio leads to weight loss. “Cardio only helps you burn a few calories and if you consume those calories after a workout, you can consider your cardio time a complete waste.” According to him, knowing your nutrition facts well and acting as per them is the main key to weight loss and burning fat.

“But, most importantly,” he says, “You need to remember that fitness is a habit, not a three-month programme at the gym. You need to be consistent and there are no shortcuts. Only hardwork, dedication and perseverance can help you achieve your goals.”
