Alia Bhatt’s dietician on how to avoid gaining weight when on holiday

Summer is here, and just like us, you’re probably finalising your annual travel plans. However, a holiday doesn’t just come by itself. There is also a big probability of going terribly off track when it comes to your healthy diet and fitness plans. We don’t blame you; trying different, local foods is a huge part of exploring a new city or country—but bingeing to the extent your health won’t forgive you for it, doesn’t have to be. ICYMI, we chatted with Alia Bhatt’s nutritionist Angie Kassabie last week, about the custom weight loss plan she has put together for the actor’s time in Bulgaria (she’s shooting there for her next film, Brahmastra, with Ranbir Kapoor).

“When most people get on a diet, they try to stop all sorts of meals that they normally enjoy, and eat only fruits and vegetables. They tend to skip main meals and not eat regularly, which actually disrupts their body,” says Kassabie. “The definition of a diet is nothing more than eating healthy, regular meals. When you have pleasure from that meal, you’re not going to look to snack and munch on things in between; most people gain weight because of this mistake.” Follow her top five tips to ensure you come back from your summer holiday with added kgs in your check-in luggage, and not on the weighing scale.

Don’t go overboard

Often, people who are otherwise following a weight loss diet, decide that vacations are the time to eat everything they can. Subconsciously, there’s a stress to start eating clean once you get back home again. But the thing is, everything in our life is planned by our mind. When we’re busy working or having fun, or even being sad, we start messing up by eating irregularly, and in large quantities. When you don’t stop yourself from eating the foods you enjoy as part of your weight loss diet, you’ll never mess it up.

Hydrate

Make sure you drink plenty of water through the day. Have a glass of water every hour as a thumb rule, so you get your daily requirement without stressing about it. Start your day with a glass of warm water as well. This will keep indigestion at bay, and cleanse your body and stomach. 90 per cent of people cannot differentiate thirst from hunger, and end up eating more instead of just drinking water.

Eat often

Contrary to popular belief, when on holiday, you need to focus on how often you eat and how much, not what you’re eating. It’s perfectly fine to try new food, whether it’s a dessert you’ve never had before or a tapas that looks interesting on a menu. Keep a watch over the quantity that you consume, though. Have a ripe banana early in the morning, and eat a hand-sized meal every two hours. Lunch can be the size of both your hands. What matters most is eating regular meals. There’s no bad food, only bad quantities—at least while travelling.

Eat slowly

When you eat slowly, you feel full faster. Your body needs 20 minutes to feel full. When you eat fast, which happens if you keep a big gap between your meals, you eat huge quantities. That’s when the weight piles on. Make sure you continue to take your antioxidant supplements so you can flush the toxins out of your body.

Get as much physical activity as possible

Move around as much as possible. Walk wherever you can, instead of taking a mechanised mode of transport. It’s important to stay active when you’re consuming food that’s possibly higher in calorie content than your regular meal.
