The incident happened just before 11am on the northbound section of the M25, near the M11 turn-off. Major queues are forming in the area with traffic being stuck in the Darford Tunnels. Police are urging drivers to avoid the area after the crash, thought to involve a lorry and a low-loader van, saw an air ambulance land.

Brentwood and Epping Forest Community Policing Team tweeted: “Essex Police are currently attending what appears to be a serious injury road traffic collision on the M25 anti clockwise track at junction 27 (the intersection with the M11 ). Traffic being sent off at junction 27.

“Any traffic intending to travel through to junction 26 and beyond will have to go up to junction 7 or down to junction 4 of the M11 & return to rejoin the M25 at junction 6 of the M11. This road is expected to be closed for a number of hours so the area should be avoided.”

Emergency crews are at the scene.

Essex County Council’s Traffic Control tweeted: “M25 anticlockwise at J27 (M11) – the carriageway is CLOSED because of an accident involving several vehicles. Queues building back to J28 (A12 ). The clockwise carriageway was briefly closed to land the air ambulance – but that has now reopened.

A spokesman for Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said one person was freed from a vehicle and is being treated by ambulance crews.

He said: “Firefighters were called to a road traffic collision on the M25 between junctions 27 and 26.

“Fire crews worked with the Ambulance Service to release one casualty.
