Aquinas High School graduate Bronson Koenig and Onalaska graduate Matt Thomas played their first Eurocup games on Wednesday, and the former Tribune players of the year walked away with mixed team results after playing well.
Koenig’s KK Mornar team lost to UNICS Kazan 97-74, but Koenig had a strong Eurocup debut. The guard played more than 20 minutes and wound up with 19 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the 3-point line.
He was 2-for-2 on free throws and had three assists to go with two rebounds and a steal.
Thomas started for Valencia Basket in an 84-62 victory over ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne. The guard played nearly 26 minutes and made 4 of 11 shots on the way to 10 points.
Thomas was 1-for-5 from the 3-point line and made his only free throw to go with two rebounds and two assists against just one turnover.
The teams will now go back to regular league play, Koenig’s KK Mornar in the Adriatic ABA and Thomas’ Valencia in the Spanish ACB.
Koenig and Thomas play on teams that compete in two leagues, alternating games between their home leagues and the Eurocup. KK Mornar is 0-1 in the Adriatic ABA and 0-1 in the Eurocup, while Valencia is 1-0 in Eurocup and 0-1 in the Spanish ACB.
