A new Hack Your City’s a-bubblin’
And so all of you we’ll be troublin’
To share all your tips
And inscrutable quips
For a town that’s not Limerick: Dublin.
Did you know even very bad limericks are hard to write? And did you know that the north side of Dublin (roughly as split by the River Liffey) is seen as the more “Irish” side, and the south as the posher, “West Brit” side?
Dublin readers, please tell us about that split and how it manifests, whether it’s changed, and any other cultural splits that affect your life in the city. Also, what are common misconceptions about the city? Wikivoyage’s long Dublin guide says, for example, that the city gets a bad rap for being rainy.
And to help Dublin’s visitors—and you sadly can’t stop them coming by commenting “Don’t go to Dublin”—can you tell us what’s worth visiting, worth avoiding, or worth taking a long trip for? What’s especially good for James Joyce fans, history buffs, families, or partiers? Where should people avoid if they don’t want to annoy the locals?
What are the overlooked museums, restaurants, pubs, and other sites? What are the nicest public spaces, and what are the best hidden treasures? And what are the overrated tourist traps that some other commenter will foolishly recommend?
What are the tricks to getting around town, to receiving good customer service and treating the staff right, to getting to know people? What are the mispronunciations or other mistakes that visitors should avoid? What are the quirks of day-to-day life in Dublin vs. your experience in America, Europe, the U.K., and even the rest of Ireland? And when you want to get out of Dublin, where do you go? What makes a good retreat or day trip?
Lastly, what are your hacks for fellow locals? What’s the stuff the tourists will never learn or get to use, like the best affordable neighborhoods, the local laws, the strategies for your morning commute?
Well farewell for now, Irish readers,
Haha, no, I’m not going to make you read another limerick. Just leave your comments below, and we’ll highlight the best in a new post on Thursday.
