STORRS, Conn. — The UConn Golf Program will host the 31st Annual Joe Giannelli UConn Golf Classic at the Shelter Harbor Golf Club in Westerly, R.I., on Friday, May 11.
The annual event has been an invaluable fundraiser for the UConn golf program for over 30 years. Proceeds from the event are deposited in the UConn Golf Team’s fund at UConn Foundation, Inc. The Huskies are just starting the spring portion of their competitive and challenging schedule and are looking to build off last season’s success, but cannot compete on such a high level without the support of donors.
Shelter Harbor is located on some 400 acres of open space and is the first new private course built in Washington County, R.I., in over 100 years. Located in Westerly and Charlestown, Shelter Harbor the the outgrowth of a desire to protect and preserve the natural environment of the area. The course is ranked 57th on Golf Week’s Best Modern Courses in the United States.
The Giannelli Golf Classic is named in honor of the longtime UConn golf coach (1981-2000) Joe Giannelli, who passed away in 2002. Registration on May 11 will begin at 10:30 a.m., with a lunch at 11 a.m. and a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. A social hour and dinner, as well as the prize ceremony and a silent auction will follow the completion of the round.
