PATNA: A video showing a school teacher opening fire with a rifle in undergarments went viral on social media in Vaishali district, prompting the police to take cognizance of the incident on Sunday.
Police said a video grab showing a school teacher Panna Kumar Pankaj and three minor children opening fire with a rifle and ‘desi kutta’ (locally made weapon) at Saidabad village under the Raghopur police station area in Vaishali district went viral on social media on Saturday evening.
Pankaj, a contract teacher, posted at the government primary school at Vahidpur village in Vaishali district became furious after one of his sons and a nephew had an altercation with the ward of a co resident Jitendra Kumar Das during a cricket match. Pankaj lost his cool and allegedly threatened Das with dire consequences when the latter complained against his kin.
The situation turned for the worse when Pankaj took out a rifle from his house and opened fire in front of Das’s residence late in the evening. Das along with his family members retaliated the attack and allegedly fired with country-made weapons. However, nobody was injured in the exchange of fire between the two rival groups.
A video depicting the incident went viral on social media on Saturday, which prompted the Raghopur police to take action against the offenders. Hajipur sadar SDPO Raghav Dayal said that an FIR was lodged against 17 people from both sides and subsequently raids were conducted at their different hideouts on Sunday.
However, all the accused, including the schoolteacher, were absconding after the incident. The rifle, which was used in the crime, is yet to be seized by the police. “What is surprising is that even minor children had been shown in the video carrying illegal weapons in their hands,” a police officer said.
Raghopur police station SHO Feraz Ahmad said the two families had a dispute over a plot of land at the village. However, a scuffle among the children of the two rivals led to Saturday’s incident, he said, adding the accused would be brought to book at the earliest.
Tension prevails in the village following the incident.
