Shedding the pounds is normally achieved by a delicate balance of exercise and dieting, but adding this simple food group into the equation can speed up results.
According to leading Gut Expert Glenn Gibson at the University of Reading, consuming prebiotics can significantly reduce bloating, cutting preparation time for fitting in to summer swimwear.
Prebiotics are a special form of dietary fiber found in foods such as artichokes, leeks, chicory and onions. Unlike probiotics, which are existing live bacteria found in yoghurt and fermented food, prebiotics act as a fertiliser for the good bacteria in your gut.
Consuming more prebiotics will cause the good bacteria in your gut to thrive, aiding digestion, reducing bloating and achieving a flatter stomach fast.
Along with prebiotics, Dr Gibson reveals the other simple methods to achieve weight loss, without slogging away at the gym or restricting yourself of your favourite foods.
Five top tips for a flat stomach by Dr Glenn Gibson
Ditch liquid calories
With all the focus on reducing calories in food it can be easy to let calorie-laden drinks slip through the cracks.
Fruit juices, energy drinks, milk and some milk alternatives can be packed with secret calories. In the hot weather it can be easy to consume liquid in large quantities without realising you’ve actually had half your recommended daily calorie allowance.
Chew food well and try eating more slowly
An easy method to aid digestion is to chew food well and consume food at a slower pace. Eating quickly can increase the amount of gas created in the stomach, leading to bloating and the feeling of a large stomach.
Chewing for a bit longer can make a dramatic difference, also giving your body the time to feel full, before you’ve cleared the plate.
“Think of making the most of each mouthful and savouring the flavours, rather than just gobbling your meals down”, says Dr Gibson. “Digestion begins from the moment we eat and without proper chewing the foods cannot be well digested leading to a build up of gas and bloating.”
Drink more water
The simple step of drinking more water can also help achieve a flat stomach. According to the gut doctor’s simple weight loss plan, the more water you drink the less you’ll retain, recommending at least 1.5 litres of waters a day.
Retaining less water inevitably leads to a less bloated stomach, with water also a key factor in aiding the body’s digestion. Water also flushes out waste and keeps the digestion system regular, all important in keeping the bloat at bay.
Take prebiotics to boost digestion
With prebiotics being the fuel to feed the gut’s bacteria, it makes sense that upping your intake will up your gut’s good bacteria, leading to a flatter stomach.
If you can’t add prebiotic rich foods into your diet, mainly from raw vegetables, taking a prebiotic supplement can work just as well, such as Bimuno Travelaid. These supplements come in many forms and can be taken as a pill, drunk in a liquid or sprinkled over food.
Cut down on salt
When upping your water intake it is important to consider how much salt you are consuming. Salt can cause the body to hold onto excess water, making it difficult to achieve a flat stomach and appear slimmed down. Cut table salt from your kitchen and taste foods before seasoning.
Another simple weight loss plan promising great results is the cumin seed method.
A staple spice in most of the nation’s kitchens, experts suggest we should be drinking cumin seeds instead.
When soaked with water cumin seeds become a magic potion for weight loss, helping to reduce overall bodymass and that hard-to-shift abdominal fat.
A recent study published by Pub Med of 78 men and women showed cumin to be as effective for weight loss as leading obesity treatment pill, Orlistat, without the side effect.
Drinking just one teaspoon of cumin seeds soaked in water can speed up weight loss results, with the seeds imparting their nutrients into the water. The seed-packed liquid can also replicate the feeling of being full, keeping snaking under control.
