In recent years, the number of dating apps on the market has massively boomed.
There are the big hitters such as Tinder, Bumble and Happn, but arguably the most popular gay and bisexual dating app in the world is Grindr, which has gained 27 million users across the globe since it launched on March 25, 2009.
It works by using a smartphone’s geolocation to bring up other profiles in the local area, which are displayed on a grid, showing those who are nearest at the top and those who are furthest away lower down the list.
Users can tap on profile pictures to bring up information about people using the app in the vicinity, before choosing whether to chat, send pictures, and share their precise location.
Grindr is available on both iOS and Android devices.
The app says it ‘represents a modern gay lifestyle that brings men together with the people, places and things they care about the most’.
Alongside the likes of the United States and the United Kingdom, the areas where the app is growing most rapidly include Mexico, Colombia and Indonesia.
And if you want the best chance of meeting someone, then log in on a Sunday night. That’s when it’s at its busiest in the UK.
The dating app offers a number of hints and tips for users to help them remain safe while using it.
It reminds users to protect their identity by not revealing too much information to people they are chatting to, while also suggesting that perhaps everything they see on other profiles may not be true.
The advice also indicates that users should tell a friend if they are meeting someone and ‘always go with your gut instinct’.
