After coach Jorge Sampaoli suggested some major players could miss out on the Russia 2018 tournament, we look at who should make the world cup squad and who should miss out based on current form, experience and calibre.

Aside from Sergio Romero, no other goalies seem to have nailed down a spot in the Argentina World Cup squad. However, there are four clear-cut contenders to join Romero in the squad, who seem to be Nahuel Guzman, Willy Caballero, Geronimo Rulli and Agustin Marchesin.

Guzman, who is 32, has been in very good form for Tigres, so it would be a good choice as an experienced back-up, but the third choice is a difficult one.

Rulli is almost certainly going to be a future Argentina goalkeeper or second choice but is very error-prone and likely to miss out on this occasion.

Caballero is a good choice based on experience and reputation, but will not be a regular in club football leading up to the world cup.

Marchesin has played for Argentina and gets regular game time at club level, but hasn’t had the experience of playing in the big games with Argentina. Caballero gets our vote based on his current club and experience to go with Romero and Guzman.

Picks: Sergio Romero, Nahuel Guzman, Willy Caballero.

Misses: Geronimo Rulli, Agustin Marchesin.
