Ronda Rousey outperformed expectations under extreme pressure and delivered a stellar performance in her professional wrestling debut at WrestleMania 34. It may not come as a surprise then that in what will likely be her second career match, Rousey will have a chance to become the Raw Women’s Champion – but the decision to grant Rousey a title shot so soon will surely be polarizing among WWE fans.

WWE announced Monday at the NBCUniversal Upfront that Rousey will face WWE Raw Women’s Champion Nia Jax at the Money In The Bank pay-per-view on June 17th in Chicago.

In a confrontation that was almost awkwardly polite, Nia Jax approached Rousey during an interview with Cathy Kelley. The champion informed Rousey that she has an obligatory title defense at Money In The Bank and wants to face Rousey, but Rousey initially deferred the opportunity to the other women on the roster.

“Wow, that’s a huge honor, and I appreciate that, but I’ve only had one match and I think there’s other women that deserve that title shot before me.”

Charlotte Flair encouraged Rousey to accept the challenge, and Nia Jax and Rousey shook hands to make the match official.

WWE now faces the task of transforming the cordial first meeting between Nia Jax and Rousey into a compelling storyline over the next few weeks – and many fans on Twitter are questioning why Rousey is wrestling for a title so soon. Rousey repeatedly said prior to WrestleMania that she didn’t want to receive special treatment, and a title match in her singles debut is hardly ordinary.

Rousey stole the show at WrestleMania and proved her critics wrong once already. Placing her in the ring with Nia Jax over a more polished talent like Flair so early in her career is a risk, but maybe Rousey can outperform expectations once again.
